Asian Makeup Tips - How to Make Your Eyes Stand Out?

Asian Makeup Tips - A New Series

Happy Friday, girlies!

Today's post introduces a new series called Asian Makeup Tips.

You can find beauty tips everywhere. So I am narrowing the focus on Asian women (like myself). But you will still find general makeup tips that apply to other race as well.

Because Asian eyes are generally slanted and small, they are not the most noticeable feature. To make our eyes stand out, we resort to makeup. It's not that we are ashamed of what we have; we just want something different, like everyone else.

To us, big eyes are unique, exotic, and fascinating.

Makeup Tips That Make Asian Eyes Stand Out

1. Line your eyes

Eyeliners do not make your eyes smaller. If applied correctly, they draw out the shape of your eyes, and make them more noticeable.

One liner I suggest is L'oreal Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner. It's made with kajal formula that provides a rich, intense effect.

2. Choose flattering colors

When it comes to makeup, picking the right colors is important. You always want to wear shades that flatter your skin tone.

Asian skin has natural yellow undertone. Therefore, muted colors such as gray, brown, taupe or gold look better.

If you wish to wear bright colors, try warm shades like plum, purple or pink.

Avoid cool colors like blues and silvers. They don't blend well with yellow skin.

3. Use false lashes

With two kids, I don't have the time to apply false eyelashes all the time. But if you can, a set of falsies makes a huge difference. Their super lengths instantly pop eyes open.

4. Apply gradient smokey

Smokey eyes look beautiful. But if you go heavy on the lids, which Asians lack, you will take over valuable property, and make eyes look closed.

Instead, apply smokey colors from darkest to lightest, from lash line up. (This technique is called "value shift.") Doing so creates a gradient effect that instantly opens the eyes.

5. Mascara. Mascara. Mascara.

If you can't do falsies, use mascara -- and lots of it. Formulas nowadays provide lush volume and unbelievable length.

How to Do Asian Eye Makeup to Make Eyes Bigger - Value Shift Technique - Beauty Blog Post

How to do Asian eye makeup?

First of all, all Asian women want their eyes to look bigger. Double lids, mono lids -- doesn't matter. To us, bigger is better.

Value Shift Technique

An eye makeup technique that I have been using is called Value Shift. It is done by applying darkest to lightest eye shadows from the lash line up.

Not only does the Value Shift technique make eyes look bigger, it provides a smoldering, smokey look too.

How to do Asian eye makeup with value shift technique?

Want to try it yourself? Just follow the steps below.

Using: Wet n' Wild Color Icon Trio in "Don't Steal My Thunder."

Step 1

Line upper and bottom lash line with dark eye liner.

Step 2

Using an eye liner brush, smudge upper liner with darkest shadow color.

Step 3

Using an eye shadow brush, apply medium color to the crease, or the area just below the brow bone.

Step 4

Using a blending brush, apply lightest color all over brow bone.

Step 5

Curl lashes and apply mascara.

Done.

Very simple. Very effective.

I highly recommend the value shift technique, whether you are Asian or not.

How to Slim Your Face with a Bronzer

Want to slim down a full face? Go to the gym.

Also, you can create the illusion of a slimmer face with makeup. Using a bronzer and a brush, you can shave five pounds off in a few easy steps.

Step 1

Make a fish face.

Step 2

Apply bronzer to the hollows of your cheeks, in upward direction, with small circular movements.

Step 3

Apply downward on the back of your jawline towards your chin.

Step 4

Start at the hollow of your cheek again, and drive upward, staying on the back, toward your hairline.

Done!

Now you are bronzer and slimmer.

Exercising works best for weight loss.

But you can use makeup to help out.

Any other suggestions for making your face look slimmer?

Skin Care Blog Post - How to Find the Perfect Foundation at the Drugstore

Drugstores sell great makeup brands, but won't let you try them on before purchase. Often, after you have bought something and excited opened the package, you realize that the color is off -- way off!

While a bad match is sometimes tolerable, like eye shadow, it's totally NOT okay to mismatch foundation. Picking the right shade of foundation is so important in achieving flawless skin.

Need help finding drugstore foundation? Check out the tips below.

1. Research

Research is key to finding the right product. Try review blogs or makeup forums for honest opinions from real women. Real women always offer the best insight. Also, it helps to find women who have similar skin tone.

2. Use Online Tools

Manufacturers like CoverGirl and Maybelline offer foundation finders on their websites. All you have to do is fill out a survey, and let the tool guide you to the right shade.

3. Bring a Match Point

If you already have a foundation that you like, bring it to the store. Match drugstore foundation to the one you have, and select the color that matches it the best.

4. Use a Blending Agent

When in doubt, blend. Try blending a bronzer or a darker shade with your new purchase to create a suitable color for your skin tone.

Picking the right shade of foundation can be tricky, but is entirely possible.

The Flowers of War Makeup - My Humble Replication

Have you watched The Flowers of War? A must see, if you ask me. An untold tale of two groups of women, doubtful to ever cross paths, except under the tragic circumstances of war. But aren't tragedies the very birth place for acts of valor? Where ordinary people do exordinary things, and where heroes are born?

Watch the movie, and you will see what I mean.

Aside from the film's wonderful story telling and cinematography, I was also in awe with the makeup. Women of 1930's China oozed of glamour!

Of course, with my homegrown skills, I was never going to give it a decent replication. But I had to try. Here is my humble attempt to replicate the makeup from ladies of The Flowers of War.

6. Deep, red lipstick.

The result?

Well, not quite the same as The Flowers of War girls, but it's as close as I can get.
